Kicking the Common Cold

February 8, 2007

WTF! I ground to a stop gasping for air after two miles on the four mile loop I’ve done more than a hundred times. Yeah the

Denver

pollution combined with already dry air at altitude makes for less than ideal cardio conditions, but why on earth was I getting so winded? Frustrated that night, I hit the sack insistent on crushing my body the following day in physical penitence. I woke up floored, hacking yellow and brown, having trouble talking and walking, sick and weak, you know the feeling.

I’ve heard a few unique solutions to kicking the common cold, but this is still my favorite. Put on as many layers as you can move in and hit the road for a hard run. You will sweat like a hog and hit the hay before you have a chance to shower or even think about how gross you feel. You’ll wake up feeling like a million bucks. People call me crazy, but it works and I’m sticking to it.

Since the flu seems to be an uncommon normality this winter, we thought it would be prudent to circulate some advice on kicking colds from other backcountry athletes. Email us with your cure for the crud at climbing@camp-usa.com. If it’s legit, we’ll post it.
